Seeing The Nutcracker

Sidenote: I know this post is a little late coming… I started writing this post before I got a blasted ear infection while on christmas/holiday break from work and then once I got back in the swing of things unfortunately posting got pushed aside. SO yeah whatever….

As a child I was heavily involved in dance.  I was lucky enough to be able to spend a lot of my time in a dance studio doing something I loved to do.  I loved jazz and tap and miss it dearly. Sometimes I hate living in suburbia since a lot of things just end when you are older. Most people move away after high school and things just aren’t catered to an older crowd so since I moved home I really haven’t danced (in a class setting) on a regular basis.

One of the things that always rekindles my love for dance is going to see the Nation Ballet of Canada perform. I never really enjoyed dancing ballet (it was way too slow and structured for me) but I have always enjoyed watching it. As a child I idolized Karen Kane and always wanted to see her dance in person.  I never ended up going to the ballet downtown as a child since my parents were never really interested since there was “no talking” and lets be honest they probably sat through enough of my dance performances to last three lifetimes but luckily I have friends who don’t mind going to the ballet.

My college roommate, Krys and I got dressed up and headed downtown for a performance of the Nutcracker this past Christmas. It definitely did not disappoint! The costumes, the dancing… everything I had hoped for and more!

It gave me an excuse to wear my new ballet shoe earrings as well (yes, I know I am not 5! but those earrings still rock!) and it definitely inspired me to start dancing again as well. I started searching for tap lessons and found some drop in tap classes on weekends that I may try in a couple weeks. Its been so long that I am a little scared to enter a class and be absolutely horrible at it.  So we will see how it goes.

101 in 1001: Final Count: Food

2012 hasn’t started exactly as planned. I had an awesome night out downtown and ended up with an ear/ sinus infection. I have been off work for the past 3 days and I am going to force myself to go in tomorrow no matter how I feel. I have been so hopped on pain meds that I either sleep or lie on the couch in pain. Not such a great way to start off the new year! It must mean that all my year can do is get better.  Lets just say that I would never wish an ear infection on my worst enemy. I know there are worse types of pain out there but man it sucks.

So in my “drugged” (I am a light weight when it comes to meds… if it says it will make you sleepy, I prepare to be in bed for at least 13 hours) state I was unable to write some posts for the 101 in 1001 delayed final count.  This is one I started recapping before I ended up bedridden so I can finish it off right now.

Lets just say this food section did not go as well as planned…

Completed….0.5/10 (ouch!!!)

  1. Make veggie sushi (so I can actually try it)-FAIL

This totally did not happen… maybe someday. (sidenote: I am allergic to seafood and fish, among other things so making it myself is the only way I will be able to try sushi.)

2. Learn how to bartend and make most classic cocktails including a classic martini-FAIL

Big fail… I kinda stopped drinking mixed drinks, and most alcoholic drinks in general. The odd time I will have one… however one win I did try (and of course did not blog about) is the Peep Martini.  Total win… those marshmallows soak up all the martini goodness! Its going to be an Easter tradition hopefully.

3. Go on a wine tour-FAIL

Maybe this year…

4. Master making chocolate truffles by hand-HALF COMPLETED

They usually look a little homemade. Nothing wrong with that.

5.Learn proper cake decorating techniques including fondant-FAIL

I can pipe a mean cupcake though.

6. Learn how to make gnocchi from my grandmother-FAIL

Don’t even want to talk about this one. I have found a recipe that looks similar to hers so I may try it in 2012.

7. Make bread by hand. Make it a constant thing I do.-FAIL

8. Attempt to make cannoli by hand-FAIL

9. Put together a recipe booklet of all my favourites- FAIL

10. make 4 different vegan desserts (1/4)– FAIL

Why bother explaining the rest? All are fails.. so better luck next time I guess.  Only 3 more sections to go… 🙂 Almost there….

101 in 1001 Final Counts: Travel

So whats better than starting the new year off with finishing an old project. I am going to try and make this week the finishing touches of the 101 in 1001 so that this project is not haunting me in 2012.  Plus since I am recovering from a cold and well New Years celebrations, whats better than a recap.

So onto the travel section…. I love to travel however, the fact that I went back to school and gave up my permanent full time job to work contract positions, I have less time to travel.  I really need to travel this year coming up.

Completed… 4/8… not bad at all looking at my track record with the last couple of sections.

1. See New York- COMPLETED

See this post for all the New York details. Visiting New York was one of my dreams and I can not wait to go back again. I am a city girl through and through.

2. See a show on Broadway-COMPLETED

In New York we got to see a couple shows. My favourite was Chicago. Hands down..  I was in love. Blog Post here.

3. Visit western Canada- FAIL

I have never been out to western Canada and I was hoping to go while I had some friends out there and well couches to crash on… I am on a budget. J Maybe I will make it there some day soon.

4. Visit Mere is St. Kitts- COMPLETED

My friend was out in St. Kitts for Vet school because she is one smart cookie. We made it out there and had a great time eating bbq ribs and chicken, lying on the beach and site seeing.  No previous blog post since well I am bad at posting. oops. Just picture a beach and me on it. 🙂

5. Travel somewhere overnight by train-FAIL

I was hoping to take the train out west and that totally didn’t happen. I also got sticker shock when I saw the price. Its bloody cheaper to fly, which is kind of sad.

6. Go to Italy-FAIL

The plan was to go August 2011 (which would have been a fail anyways) but plans changed at the last minute.

7. Do a hippo tour of TO-FAIL

Hopefully I will get to do this ridiculous tour this summer.

8. Go on a trip spontaneously- could be a day trip or overnight. No planning ahead of time allowed. – COMPLETED

When I first started this challenge and ended up going back to school, I got dragged away to Port Dalhouse, ON for a weekend away. It was last minute, I left within 24 hours of agreeing to go and had a wicked time.  The pictures remain under lock and key for good reason.

Overall this travel section has been one of the better ones and will hopefully I will be adding some trips to this list in the next couple of years.

Before I am 27…

I turned 26 on December 7th of 2011.  Its been 10 years since I was 16. I feel freaking old but because I still live at home some days I still feel like I did 10 years ago. I guess its the price you pay for quitting your full time permanent job to go back to school to do something you actually have a passion for.

I originally did the 101 in 1oo1 challenge to get out of a depression I was in.  I had moved home, was working a shitty job in insurance for 2 years and was sick and tired of feeling like I had given up.   I used to be feisty. I used to have an opinion. I was used to being a smart ass and not always going with the grain not someone who worked in a corporate environment always fearing for her job.  My blog name is “Noone ever suspects the knitter” for a reason (even though it doesn’t always come out in my blog posts… oops).  Just because I don’t knit as much any more doesn’t mean it still doesn’t apply. I have always had many different interests, loved to push the envolope and always liked to challenge peoples ideas of me.

I tried to compile a list of 27 things I wanted to do before I was 27 but they seemed all like meaningless tasks that I was trying to achieve.  They were all little things that would be nice to do but would I didn’t know if I would actually have the same goals in a month, let alone a year. To be honest, that is one thing I am learning from recounting the 101 challenge, I don’t want the same things that I wanted back when I started.  I have changed, and hopefully evolved and grown in the process.

So after all the recent events that have transpired over the last month (and well the last year… most of them very personal to not make this blog), I have decided that this year will be a year of being fearless. I will strive for new challenges and new creative outlets and strive to try as many new things as possible.

So Happy New Year everyone! Let 2012 be a year of fearlessness and happiness!

Surprise… Surprise…

The beautiful thing about working for a company that shuts down for a week over christmas is that I actually have time to knit and well relax after the family stuff is all over.

My project box is still overflowing with old projects but I started a new one anyways after I went yarn shopping with Bethany the last time.  I am slowly working on the Ramona Cowl from Knitscene Magazine.  I am using one of the balls of Noro I bought and some grey yarn that was in the stash.

This is what it looked like half way through the first repeat while pulled over my knee to stop it from rolling long enough to take a picture. I am half way through the second repeat now (out of 10..eek) and well its taking forever.

This pattern has been a fun knit so far but starting it was a pain in the bloody rear. I don’t like the cast on method the author of the pattern used and I had to re-start knitting the thing three times because it kept on twisting. I finally decided to knit two rows in just the grey before starting the colour work because it just wasn’t working.

I will be honest and say that I don’t particularly like doing colour work. I hate being tangled in yarn and having to stop and unwind the yarn. It sucks. I am more of a lace knitter so this is definitely trying.  Lets see how long I work on this thing before I give up. and it ends up in the “land of misfit knits” or the black hole I call my in progress knitting basket.  Maybe I will finish this one in 2012…

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas! and happy Boxing Day (if you are a shopper!)!

Hopefully everyone had a good holiday whether you celebrate or not!

Christmas over here is usually very busy and this year was no exception. I even avoided Boxing day shopping today which is an oddity for me. I went out to two stores (I got a pair of snowboarding boots!) and thats it.

That being said, my list for 27 things to do before  I am 27 is not even half way done. So much for starting this year off right! Probably by the end of the week I will have it up, along with a couple more posts.

101 in 1001 Final Count: Organizational

Okay I really need to get going on finishing these posts.  Get ready for a few in the next couple of weeks along with the new (more manageable) list.

This organizational section was okay for me… not the worst and hopefully it doesn’t end up being the best section. L That would suck.

Grand total…. /6

  1. Print all pictures immediately after taking them of important moments of my life.-FAIL

To be honest, I think I did this once. All my pictures are in iphoto… which I think is a plus. I think the photo album is a dying breed.

  1. Clean out my underwear drawer and get rid of anything questionable– HALF FAIL

It was looking better but it is starting to look questionable again. Why I thought this was a good idea for this list is beyond me.

  1. Get rid of all of my “fat” clothes or get them altered- FAIL

Why I used “fat” clothes again is beyond me… I usually get rid of things that I don’t wear but there are a couple items I am holding onto for dear life. Plus the fact that I haven’t been to the gym in ages, I have a cold and its well Christmas mean that I will probably need some roomy clothing in the near future.

  1. Keep track of all finances and don’t let the bills pile up.- COMPLETED

At the time this list was finished I was well organized and there were no bills or papers anywhere. The chaos of the last couple of weeks… not so much. Time to get back on track.

  1. Keep desk clean for a full month.- COMPLETED

I am marking this completed since well I had done it. It didn’t say I had to keep it organized.  Up until two days ago, when I moved offices at work, my desk was spotless… that should count for something.

  1. Redecorate my room in my parent’s house.- COMPLETED

If you have to return to your parent’s home after moving away for school due to the lovely economy or if you are like me and choose to go back to school, it always helps to redecorate it so it doesn’t remind you of high school. One less reminder always helps.

Next post there will be pictures I swear!
